Sherrie Rose on Facebook: Two Profiles from 2009 and 2012

Facebook 2009:  I took a screen capture of my profile the day that Facebook usernames became available.  Since there are many women named “Sherrie Rose” including Hollywood director and actor, I wanted to get a distinct Web address for my profile.  http://facebook.com/sherrierose

From the beginning of Facebook, people have used their real names to share and connect with the people they know.  Names are the most common way we connect with one another.  Adding the user name was an attempt by Facebook for more authenticity to create a trusted environment because the username helps you know the identity of people on Facebook.

Facebook 2012:  With the introduction of Facebook Timeline, which started rolling out in December 2011, the way to differentiate your profile was to use a cover image.  Even if your profile is set to private, your cover image is public and is picked up in the search engines.  Because of this, I took the liberty to add a cover photo showing a woman at the beach, reading her Amazon Kindle, with the thought bubble, “Love My Kindle purchase today, ‘The Webinar Way‘.”  As the author of The Webinar Way I thought this was an understated way to let friends know about my book.

In between 2009 and 2011 we had profiles with five of the recent photos displaying at the top.  This was a lot of fun as there was a app to create a theme of the five photos in a mosaic style.  In 2009 you also had a choice to tell Facebook if an ad was relevant to you or not. Facebook ads promised to keep Facebook clutter-free and clean but you can be the judge of that yourself.

What I miss about the “old Facebook profile” is the About Section that displayed under your photo.  A few words and perhaps a link.  Many of my friends had very witty sayings and quotes that were memorable.  Now you have to click the About link to read more.  The current Timeline profile format reads like a resume with your job position, company, school, where you live and grew up and more data related (and mostly boring) stuff.  I made the personal choice not to include this boring stuff and my 5061 Facebook friends and over 900 subscribers don’t seem to care.  I added a link to my Facebook page “Sherrie Rose” so folks could see what I was up to in the business arena.

In Facebook’s Q3 earnings report the big news was Facebook mobile because of the proliferation of mobile use in the younger demographic.  I’ll report of Facebook profiles on mobile devices at another time.
